I have purchased the Link to Document Column.

The column works great; however, I have a problem with files saved in a specific naming convention.

Files saved with multiple periods will not open in word. It appears that word is trying to open the document, but it simply closes.

I have confirmed that the problem is persistent across multiple computers. The link looks like:

http://sharepoint/_layouts/ArtfulBits.SiteColumns/LinkToDocument/FlexibleLinkHandler.ashx?id=SPFile:38d8f9e2-a6c0-4719-86af-0461db9078f8?SPWeb:826acf50-1abd-49eb-ac8f-032af288f857&originalUrl=/Docs/SCR/LastName, FirstName - 72019/24371.SETTLEMENT PROPOSAL.doc

How can I work around this issue without renaming all my files. Most legacy files have the client number appended to the front of the file name as shown above.

Hello,

Could you be more specific about:
1) what browser are you using to open DOC file?
2) do you save DOC file to disk prior to opening?

All clients are running:
Windows 7 Enterprise
IE 8.0
Download to local drafts feature is not enabled.
Files are open directly.

I have attached the internal column contents.
File Attachment(s):
column contents.txt (1kb) downloaded 6 time(s).

Hello,

Unfortunately we cannot reproduce the issue with the exact name used. File opens in Word properly.

Please clarify the following to better diagnose the issue:
1) What version of SharePoint are you using (2007/2010, Foundation, Enterprise)
2) what is the authentication of application set up
3) whether intermediate IE window is popped after clicking on document link and before Save confirmation dialog appears

Please try to open problematic document directly from Document Library in both modes Read-only and Edit instead of using LinkToDocument column and let me know Word's behavior.

Thanks.

Also please indicate what security zone IE is using for your http://sharepoint site, whether it is detected as Local Intranet or Internet.

1. We are using Sharepoint 2010 Enterprise.
2. Authentication is the OOB authentication - I think Windows or NTLM (Windows Server 2008 R2 w SP1)
3. An intermediate windows does pop-up, then closes; however, after the intermediate windows, no file opens.

I assumed that the file name was the problem becuase when I removed the portion of the name prior to the first period, everything works.

If you would like to call me to discuss, please send an email to my address on record and I will respond quickly with the number between 9AM and 4PM Eastern Standard Time.

Security Zone:

We use two security zones, one HTTP and one HTTPS. I have observed the same behavior from both.
